In the course of the 19th century, Jews became citizens of their countries. During this development, in Germany synagogues were treated like churches in terms of religious law, Jewish structures were created as though Judaism was a “religion”. This had far-reaching consequences for the development of modern Judaism in general. To this day, the question remains open as to whether the characterization of Judaism as a “religion” applies at all. Aren't Jews rather, a “people”?In modern times there are also voices that even propose completely different definitions: Judaism as a civilization? This lecture gives a lively insight into the problem and its current debate. (The lecture will be given in English, Präsentationsfolien werden in Deutsch sein.)
